About

Clear Cogent Solutions is a research security-focused business consultancy headed by myself, Alan Campbell, as the managing director and principal consultant.

Before starting this business, I worked for almost a decade in the research office of a leading Russell Group university. For much of that period, my role focused on export control and, later, research security. Through managing the delivery of the in-house advice and compliance service, I developed a deep understanding of the research security environment in the UK, Europe and beyond.

From policy development to devising and delivering training, from designing and implementing compliance procedures to providing advice, support and export licensing assessments, my experience spans the full research security spectrum. I have a practical, first-hand understanding of the university sector’s day-to-day challenges and operational realities, but I also know how seriously it takes its mission of providing education and research for the public good.

Research security is a complex and fast-moving field, but also, I think, a fascinating one. At its heart is scientific research and the goal of facilitating safe and responsible international collaboration. Through my consultancy, I aim to make my knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for research security available to clients throughout the higher education and research ecosystem.
